PREVENTION
Feed hard or coarse foods. A prescription diet called t/d® (made by Science Diet) is designed to reduce the accumulation of plaque and tartar to help retard the development of gingivitis and periodontal disease. There is both a canine and feline t/d® formulation available.
Brush your pet's teeth periodically. There is a special enzymatic toothpaste developed specifically for dogs and cats (don't use human toothpaste- it can upset their stomach!). Abrasive dental cleaning pads can also be used instead of a toothbrush.
Regular professional cleaning is the most effective way to ensure good dental health for your pet. Don't wait until the tartar is caked around your dog's or cat's teeth. At that point, bacteria has already damaged gums and major organs.
